At the award ceremony for the award “Luka Ritz” – Violence is Not Courage, which was held yesterday in Zagreb at the Old City Hall, awards were given to Luka Mihalić, posthumously, and volunteer Barbara Rubinić.
The award “Luka Ritz” – Violence is Not Courage is awarded to students from the 5th to 8th grades and from the 1st to 4th grades of Zagreb’s elementary and secondary schools, respectively, for their significant contribution to the affirmation of human rights, exceptional tolerance and promotion of peace, freedom and equality among their peers.
Young Luka Mihalić died last July after a battle with leukemia, but despite his severe illness he wanted to help all those who had found themselves in a similar situation. It was at his initiative that we organized two actions to join the Registry of voluntary hematopoietic stem cell donors.
The first action was held in March at Luka’s primary school, Tituš Brezovački, in Špansko. A total of 77 potential donors, the parents of Luka’s schoolmates and famous athletes came to support the school’s and Luka’s request for help. The second action was held at the Bukovac Primary School, where 45 potential donors joined the Registry.
