The people of Rijeka once again showed their humane side and responded in large numbers to the Campaign to register in the Croatian Register of Voluntary Donors of Blood-forming Stem Cells. We held the action in Rijeka’s National Reading Room to help a twelve-year-old girl, Rita, who is being treated at KBC Rijeka for relapse of leukemia.
Despite the heat, 164 residents of Rijeka entered the register. Support for the action was also provided by Rijeka’s deputy mayors, Sandra Krpan and Goran Palčevski, and the director of the Rijeka City Library, Niko Cvjetković.
We were also visited by the father of little Rita, Mr. Franko, who reacted very emotionally when he saw how many citizens responded.
He thanked all the citizens who came to the National Reading Room to help his daughter, he thanked the Ana Rukavina Foundation, Ana Rukavina’s mother, Marija Rukavina, the City of Rijeka, all the doctors and other medical personnel who take care of his daughter, and all citizens throughout Croatia who are went to transfusion centers and entered the registry in order to find a matching unrelated donor for his daughter as soon as possible.
The Ana Rukavina Foundation also thanks all the citizens of Rijeka who responded to the Action and registered in the register, the City of Rijeka, the Deputy Mayor of Rijeka Sandra Krpan and Goran Palčevski, and the director of the Rijeka City Library Niki Cvjetković and the wonderful sisters Antoneli and Andreja, who took the samples with their skillful hands .
