Today is the National Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Day, to express solidarity and support to all those waiting for a transplant and thank all donors and their families for their noble decision to donate.
According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia, Croatia is one of the leading countries in the world in the field of organ donation and transplantation, thanks to the highly developed awareness of donation and solidarity of our citizens, the excellence of transplantation teams and an efficient organizational model.
According to the preliminary report of the National Transplantation Program 2024, available on the website of the Ministry of Health, in 2024 there were 123 organ donors in Croatia, and thanks to them 299 transplants were performed.
In addition to being at the very top of the world in solid organ transplantation, Croatia is, according to the report of the World Marrow Donor Association for 2023, 9th in a row among the member countries of the World Registry in terms of the number of stored doses of umbilical cord blood stem cells per 10,000 inhabitants.
Of course, this success was achieved thanks to you who, by registering in the Croatian Registry and donating cord blood stem cells, decided to help patients and increase their chances of recovery. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the 190 stem cell and bone marrow donors who gave a part of themselves to save someone’s life!
We would like to thank the Samobor City Red Cross Society, the Perspektiva Association, and the Roma National Minority Council of the City of Zagreb for co-organizing the actions in the Croatian Bone Marrow Donor Registry in Samobor on May 19th and in Novi Jelkovac on May 22nd, where three new potential donors joined the Croatian Registry.
