Many good-willed citizens gathered last Monday on Trg Republike Hrvatske in Rijeka in order to join the Registry of voluntary hematopoietic stem cell donors and in that way contribute to saving human lives.
The Ana Rukavina Foundation organized an action to join the Registry to which 223 citizens of Rijeka responded by giving blood for tissue typing and thereby increasing the chances of saving someone’s life.
By joining the Registry, every citizen has become a potential bone marrow donor, and with this selfless act the people of Rijeka demonstrated their outstanding civic solidarity. Namely, bone marrow transplantation can cure patients suffering from acute and chronic forms of leukemia, as well as patients with severely damaged bone marrow, and the cure for this devastating disease lies within us! Thanks to the citizens of Croatia, the national Registry of voluntary hematopoietic stem cell donors has so far issued 25 transplants which have saved 25 lives; 15 transplants were for recipients in Croatia and 10 were for recipients abroad.
Of course, we would sincerely like to thank the organizer, Mrs. Gordana Crnković, for helping us organize yet another successful action, as well as all the wonderful volunteers who helped us during the action. We are especially grateful to all the young people who took the time and joined the Registry and in that way increased the chances of saving someone’s life!
