Women athletes were wearing two badges at the first athletic international half-marathon: one for Women’s network Croatia and one for the Foundation.
Athletic club “MARATHON 2006” under direct high auspices of the Ministry of science, education and sport of the Republic of Croatia, Zagreb County and the town of Velika Gorica organized the first athletic international half-marathon for women ZAGREB-VELIKA GORICA December 10th 2006. Of registered 84 athletes, 56 started the race, 54 participants completing it within the time limit; they come from 6 countries (Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina).
In an exceptionally interesting race, the first place was won by Simona Staicu from Hungary with 1:16:06. Lucia Kimani from Kenya with Bosnia and Herzegovina passport was 11 seconds behind the winner. Race favorites Helena Javornik (1:16:44) had to be happy with the third and Ana Subotić (1:18:28) with the fourth place.
The best positioned Croatian athlete Marija Vraić ran the race with 1:23:05, enough for the seventh final position.
Along with the starting number, the athletes wore two badges: Women’s network Croatia and I WANT LIFE of the Foundation in memory of late journalist Ana Rukavina.
Assistant Minister of science, education and sport of the Republic of Croatia mr. Željko Klarić was present at the start of the race and fired the start gun.
The race was supported by promotional materials of the Croatian tourist community, Tourist community of Zagreb county; Tourist community of Velika Gorica supported the race financially.
