Dear friends, today is the National Day of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation.
According to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia, Croatia is one of the leading countries in the world in the field of organ donation and transplantation thanks to a highly developed awareness of donation and solidarity of our citizens, the quality of transplant teams, and an effective organizational model.
According to the preliminary report of the National Transplant Program 2020 available on the website of the Ministry of Health, there were 104 organ donors in Croatia in 2020, and thanks to them, 219 transplants were performed.
In addition to being at the very top of the world in solid organ transplantation, according to the report of the BMDW (Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide) for 2014, Croatia is 11th among the members of the BMDW in terms of the number of potential donors per 10,000 inhabitants and 8th among countries of the BMDW by the number of stored umbilical cord blood stem cell doses per 10,000 inhabitants.
Of course, this success was achieved thanks to you who, by enrolling in the Croatian Bone Marrow Donor Registry and donating umbilical cord blood stem cells, decided to help the sick and increase their chances of recovery. Thank you and thank you 132 stem cell and bone marrow donors who gave a part of themselves to save someone’s life!
